First math competitions β Math Kangaroo & MOEMS, gently
Tarak Mutcharla Β· Jul 9
Grade 5 is the sweet spot to try a first contest: old enough to sit 75 minutes, young enough that nothing counts for anything. That's the magic β it's all upside.
How the KC prep group works
Parent-led, free, meets Sunday afternoons from January until the March Math Kangaroo. One past paper a session, problems discussed out loud, snacks non-negotiable. Kids who've never seen a competition problem are exactly who it's for.
Keeping it fun when the score is a 12
Our daughter's first Kangaroo score was, charitably, modest. The line that saved it: "these problems are written so nobody gets them all β which ones did you LIKE?" She picked two, we redid them at home, and she asked to sign up again next year. That's the win condition at this age β wanting to come back.
